What is a RAMS document is answered by its seven blocks. The header: job, site, dates, author, reviewer, version. The task: what and where. The risk assessment rows. The method steps with the controls attached. Plant, permits and PPE. Emergency and rescue arrangements. Sign-on and review. One file, in that order, because the approver reads the first three and the last two, and the crew reads the middle. The risk assessment and method statement tool on this site prints the seven blocks, free and without an account.
Blocks one to three
The header files the document and names who is accountable; the task sentence bounds it; the assessment rows find the hazards and decide the controls. Regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, cited below, requires every employer to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to the health and safety of their employees, and regulation 3(6) requires an employer with five or more employees to record the significant findings and any group of employees especially at risk.
Blocks four and five
The steps with each control at its place, referenced by hazard number; the plant with inspections, the permits, the PPE per step. The crew reads these at the briefing. A step that names no control is one where the crew decides; a permit not named is a permit not obtained.
Blocks six and seven
The site's emergency procedure, the first aider, the hospital, the rescue plan for height; then the crew's signatures and the review date. The signatures are what make the document a record. A height task with no rescue plan in block six is the commonest reason a RAMS document is returned.
Who reads it
The principal contractor at approval under CDM, cited below; the crew at the briefing; an inspector after an incident. DailyLogDesk Pro keeps the document against the job; the tool prints it. From the vendors' own pricing pages, cited below: SafetyCulture lists its Premium plan at $29 per seat per month billed monthly or $24 billed annually, with a free plan for small teams; Contractor Foreman lists its Basic plan at $49 per month for one user. DailyLogDesk Pro is $29 per month for the whole site team.
