RAMS H&S: the risk assessment and method statement, and the health and safety system it sits inside, from the legal duty to the daily log

RAMS H&S is the RAMS seen as part of a system rather than a file on its own. The RAMS decides and applies the controls for a task; the system around it shows the people were trained, the plant was inspected, the crew was briefed, the incidents were recorded and the days were logged. The HSE's guidance, cited below, gives risk assessment as five steps: identify hazards, assess the risks, control the risks, record your findings, review the controls, and says that if you employ 5 or more people you must record your significant findings. The risk assessment and method statement tool on this site prints the RAMS, and the incident report template and the daily activity report print two of the documents around it, free.

The RAMS at the centre

Assessment rows, method steps with controls attached, permits and plant, emergency arrangements, sign-on. Regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, cited below, requires every employer to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to the health and safety of their employees, and regulation 3(6) requires an employer with five or more employees to record the significant findings and any group of employees especially at risk.

Training and plant

The people named in the method with the training the task needs, dated; the plant it names with its inspection record. An auditor cross-checks these against the RAMS. A method that names a MEWP with no operator card on file is a finding an auditor reaches in minutes.

Talks, incidents, logs

The toolbox talk sheet that repeated the RAMS's controls with signatures; the incident report that tested them, with the investigation and the change; the daily log that records who was on site and what was done. The three documents that show the RAMS was lived rather than filed.

Kept as a set

Per job, exportable, for the principal contractor under CDM, cited below, the client and the inspector. DailyLogDesk Pro keeps the set; the tools print each document. From the vendors' own pricing pages, cited below: SafetyCulture lists its Premium plan at $29 per seat per month billed monthly or $24 billed annually, with a free plan for small teams; Contractor Foreman lists its Basic plan at $49 per month for one user. DailyLogDesk Pro is $29 per month for the whole site team.
