Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs you enter, by the method stated below it. The only constants DailyLogDesk supplies are the published reporting clocks and assessment steps, each cited where it is used. The defaults are a worked example to replace with your own.
A welding risk assessment for the contractor welding on site rather than in a fabrication shop: the fire from the spark and the spatter reaching what cannot be seen, the fume in the enclosed space, the arc eye and the burn to the welder and to the person walking past, the electric shock from the set and the leads in the wet, the cylinders and the hoses, and the fire watch after the last weld. Each is a row with the control, scored before and after, in the template on this site; Pro keeps the assessment with the hot works permit and the method statement.

The fire: clearance, screening and the watch
The area cleared of combustibles to the distance the permit requires, what cannot be moved covered with fire blankets, the openings in the floor and the wall through which spatter travels found and sealed, the extinguisher at the work, and a named person on fire watch for the period after the last weld. The hot works permit is the control and the assessment is what the permit is issued against.
The fume and the space
Welding fume in an enclosed space is the health row: local extraction at the arc, ventilation of the space, respiratory protection where extraction is not enough, and the confined space rules where the space is one. The row names the extraction and who checks it is running before the arc is struck.
The arc, the shock and the people nearby
Screens so the arc is not seen by the people walking past, the welder's own protection, the set earthed and the leads inspected and kept out of the wet, and the exclusion of others from the work area. The person passing is a row in their own right.
The cylinders, the hoses and the record
Cylinders upright and secured, the hoses and the regulators inspected, the flashback arrestors fitted, the cylinders removed from the space when the work stops. Pro keeps the assessment, the hot works permit and the method statement together against the project.

Welding risk assessment: common questions
Do I need a hot works permit for welding?
On most sites, yes, and the permit is issued against the assessment. The permit is the control that makes the clearance and the fire watch someone's job.
Is the template free?
Yes. The risk assessment template on this site prints the scored assessment with no account; Pro keeps it with the permit.
How long should the fire watch last?
For the period the permit and the site's rules require after the last weld, with the watcher named on the assessment and the time recorded on the daily log.
