What is RAMS in safety? The document that places every control at a step of the work and has the crew sign it before the task

What is RAMS in safety is answered by what it does on the day. The risk assessment finds the hazards and decides the controls; the method statement places each control at a step of the work; the crew reads it, questions it and signs it. The control that is at a step is done before the work; the control that is only in a paragraph is remembered, or not. The HSE's guidance, cited below, gives risk assessment as five steps: identify hazards, assess the risks, control the risks, record your findings, review the controls, and says that if you employ 5 or more people you must record your significant findings. The risk assessment and method statement tool on this site prints the document, free and without an account.

Finds and decides

The task's hazards on this site, who is at risk, how likely, how serious, and the specific control for each with the risk that remains. Regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, cited below, requires every employer to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to the health and safety of their employees, and regulation 3(6) requires an employer with five or more employees to record the significant findings and any group of employees especially at risk.

Places

Exclusion zone at step one, isolation proved at step three, edge protection at step four, the rescue plan in the emergency block. Each control referenced by hazard number at the step, so a reviewer can find every one.

Signs

Briefed to the crew, changed where they find it wrong, signed on the version briefed. The signatures are the evidence that the controls were known; the changes are the evidence the crew read it. A refusal to sign is noted with a witness, and the task waits until the briefing has been given.

Is checked

By the principal contractor against the construction phase plan under CDM, cited below, before the task starts. DailyLogDesk Pro keeps the approved, signed RAMS against the job; the tool prints it. From the vendors' own pricing pages, cited below: SafetyCulture lists its Premium plan at $29 per seat per month billed monthly or $24 billed annually, with a free plan for small teams; Contractor Foreman lists its Basic plan at $49 per month for one user. DailyLogDesk Pro is $29 per month for the whole site team.
